Asia Cup Trophy Row BCCI Explains India’s Decision

The Asia Cup trophy row has become one of the major talking points following India’s triumph in the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup trophy. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has clarified that the Indian women’s cricket team’s decision not to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi was a collective decision taken by the Board. Shukla also said that Naqvi did not raise any objection to the decision.

India produced a strong performance in the final in Dubai, defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs to claim the Women’s Asia Cup trophy title. Despite the on-field success, the post-match trophy presentation attracted considerable attention. The Indian team did not accept the trophy from Naqvi, continuing a similar stance seen during the men’s Asia Cup trophy in 2025.

According to Rajeev Shukla, the matter had been discussed within the BCCI before the decision was communicated to the team. He explained that the Board collectively decided that the players would not receive the trophy from Naqvi. Shukla further stated that the ACC chairman did not object to the decision and subsequently presented the trophy as required before leaving the venue.

The development follows a broader change in India-Pakistan cricket relations after the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had earlier described the trophy decision as a conscious institutional call based on the prevailing circumstances and sentiments in India. He also clarified that the Board had informed the ACC in advance that the Indian team would not participate in the trophy presentation under those circumstances.

At the same time, the BCCI has maintained a distinction between playing cricket in multinational tournaments and participating in specific ceremonial arrangements. India continues to fulfil its sporting commitments in international competitions, while the trophy presentation involving a particular official is treated as a separate matter. This distinction has become an important part of the discussion surrounding the Asia Cup trophy 2026 controversy.

Shukla also addressed images showing BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia interacting with Mohsin Naqvi during the final. He described the meeting as a routine professional interaction, pointing out that officials naturally meet and communicate when they are present at the same cricket match. He suggested that the interaction should not be interpreted as a change in the Board’s position on the trophy presentation.

For the Indian women’s team, however, the central achievement remains its performance on the field. India defeated Sri Lanka convincingly and secured another major continental title. The BCCI has praised the players for delivering the result that mattered most and expressed confidence ahead of the team’s next assignment at the Asian Games in Japan.

The Asia Cup trophy row has therefore added a diplomatic and administrative dimension to what was otherwise a memorable cricketing achievement for India. Rajeev Shukla’s latest comments indicate that the BCCI stands behind the decision and considers it a collective institutional position rather than an individual choice made by the players. The controversy is likely to remain part of the wider discussion around India-Pakistan cricket relations, while the Indian women’s team now turns its attention toward future international competitions.
