Asian Games 2026: Yashvir, Gulveer, Sreeshankar Win Silver
India enjoyed another productive day in athletics at the Asian Games 2026, with Yashvir Singh, Gulveer Singh and Murali Sreeshankar each securing silver medals in their respective events. Their performances added to a medal-rich day for the Indian contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya Games in Japan. Athletics alone contributed six medals on the day, including three silver and three bronze medals.
Yashvir Singh produced one of the highlights of the evening in the men’s javelin throw. Competing in difficult, rainy conditions, he registered a personal best of 85.72 metres to claim the silver medal. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won gold with an 88.55-metre effort, while India’s Rohit Yadav completed the podium with a throw of 84.35 metres. The result gave India a double podium finish in the event.
Yashvir’s performance was particularly notable because he stepped into the competition in the absence of Neeraj Chopra. His personal-best throw allowed him to finish ahead of several strong competitors and helped India maintain its impressive record in javelin at major international competitions. Rohit Yadav’s bronze also made the event a memorable outing for the Indian team.
In the men’s 1500 metres, Gulveer Singh captured another silver medal for India. Gulveer produced a personal-best performance in the final, adding his second silver of the Games after previously finishing second in the 10,000 metres. His latest medal further established him as one of India’s leading distance runners at the Asian Games 2026.
Gulveer’s 1500m race was closely contested. He stayed among the leading runners for much of the race before being overtaken late in the final stages. Despite missing the gold medal, his performance secured another podium finish and demonstrated his ability to compete across different middle- and long-distance events.
Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar also added a silver medal to India’s athletics tally. He recorded a best jump of 8.07 metres, finishing second in the men’s long jump. This was his second consecutive Asian Games silver medal, following his runner-up finish at the Hangzhou Games.
Sreeshankar’s competition was interrupted after he suffered an ankle injury during his fourth attempt. He did not take his final two attempts, but his earlier 8.07-metre jump was enough to keep him on the podium. His result highlighted the significance of his early effort in challenging weather conditions.
The three silver medals were part of a wider athletics haul for India. Vithya Ramraj won bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles while setting a new national record, and Parul Chaudhary secured bronze in the women’s 5000m. Together with the javelin double podium finish from Yashvir and Rohit, the results made September 28 an important day for Indian athletics.
The performances of Yashvir Singh, Gulveer Singh and Murali Sreeshankar also added valuable medals to India’s overall Asian Games campaign. Their results underline the depth of Indian athletics, with athletes producing strong performances across field events, middle-distance running and throwing disciplines.
As the Asian Games 2026 continue, India’s athletics contingent still has opportunities to add more medals. The performances in Nagoya have already produced a substantial collection of podium finishes, giving Indian sport fans several notable moments to follow during the remainder of the competition.
