Asian Games 2026: Priya Ghanghas Wins Boxing Bronze
Asian Games 2026 boxing delivered another memorable day for India as Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya secured bronze medals in their respective events at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Both Indian boxers reached the semifinals, guaranteeing podium finishes, before their campaigns ended in the last-four stage. Their medals added to India’s growing boxing tally at the continental competition.
Priya Ghanghas competed in the women’s 60kg category and entered the Asian Games with considerable momentum. The 20-year-old boxer had already demonstrated her ability to perform on major international stages. Her run in Aichi-Nagoya included a strong quarterfinal performance against Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova, where Priya recovered from an early deficit and earned a unanimous 5-0 decision. That victory guaranteed her a medal and sent her into the semifinals.
In the semifinal, Priya faced China’s Yang Chengyu, a former world champion. The bout proved to be a difficult test against an experienced opponent. Yang secured a 4-1 decision, ending Priya’s attempt to reach the gold-medal bout. However, reaching the semifinals meant that Priya had already secured a bronze medal, giving her a podium finish on her Asian Games debut.
Priya’s performance also continued a strong period in her boxing career. Reports noted that she had won gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and also finished on top at the 2026 Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar. Her Asian Games bronze therefore adds another international medal to an increasingly notable season.
India also earned a men’s boxing bronze through Kapil Pokhariya in the 90kg category. Kapil had entered the semifinal after defeating South Korea’s Kim Gichae by a 5-0 unanimous decision. In the last-four bout, he met Uzbekistan’s Turabek Khabibullaev, the reigning world champion and an experienced international boxer. Kapil fought for a place in the final but ultimately lost the contest 1-4.
Despite the semifinal defeats, the two results represented important podium finishes for Indian boxing at the Asian Games 2026. India’s boxing team had already surpassed its medal count from the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, where the country collected one silver and three bronze medals. The latest results took India’s boxing haul at the ongoing Games to six medals, according to reports.
The Indian boxing campaign was still continuing, with Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal progressing to their respective finals. Their advancement gave India further opportunities to add medals before the boxing competition concluded.
For Priya Ghanghas, the Asian Games 2026 bronze medal marks an important achievement in her first appearance at the continental event. For Kapil Pokhariya, the 90kg bronze provides another significant podium finish at a major international competition. Together, their performances have added two more medals to India’s campaign and highlighted the depth of Indian boxing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
