The intensifying El Niño weather pattern could increase the Raise Dengue Risk, malaria and heat-related illnesses across India, according to a recent WHO warning. Changes in temperature, rainfall and humidity can create conditions that favour mosquito breeding while also increasing heat stress.

Delhi has already reported a rise in mosquito-borne diseases, with 90 dengue cases recorded in August, taking the seasonal total to 311. Malaria cases also increased from 17 in July to 53 in August, highlighting growing public-health concerns.

Warmer temperatures can speed up the development of Raise Dengue Risk virus inside mosquitoes, while irregular rainfall can leave stagnant water in coolers, containers, drains and construction areas. These locations can become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

At the same time, prolonged heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly among outdoor workers, children and other vulnerable groups. Research has also found links between temperature, rainfall, El Niño conditions and dengue patterns in India.

Experts recommend removing stagnant water regularly, using mosquito protection, staying hydrated and avoiding excessive outdoor exposure during peak heat. Anyone experiencing concerning symptoms should seek medical advice rather than self-diagnosing.
