VinFast Plans is changing its India EV strategy with plans for two new electric vehicles developed specifically for the Indian market. The new models, internally referred to as VF X and VF Y, are currently at an early development stage, with the company already discussing plans with Indian suppliers.

The strategy shift follows VinFast’s decision to pause local manufacturing plans for the VF 3, VF 6 and VF 7 after cost concerns made it difficult to meet its targeted pricing. The VF 6 and VF 7 will continue to be assembled in India using kits imported from Vietnam.

The upcoming VF X could be particularly important for buyers because VinFast plans is reportedly targeting a price below $12,000. The compact EV is expected to sit below the VF 6 in size while offering more space than the VF 3. VinFast also wants to work with Indian suppliers from the early design stage to control costs and better match local requirements.

With its Indian factory capable of producing 50,000 vehicles annually initially and scalable to 150,000, VinFast is positioning India as a major manufacturing and regional export base.
